Renewable Energy Group (REG, www.regfuel.com) started construction on one of the largest biodiesel facilities in the Gulf Coast — a 60 million gallon biodiesel plant in St. Charles Parish, located 20 miles west of New Orleans. The facility will also be owned and managed by REG.

The REG plant is located on the International-Matex Tank Terminals (IMTT) site and is less than two miles from feedstock provider, Bunge North America, the largest oil seed processor in the world.

The plant’s port access is expected to allow for the movement of raw materials and finished biodiesel product through various transportation outlets. The facility will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and is expected to create 100 jobs during the 14-month construction period.

The Gulf Coast plant will expand the REG network and is the third 60 million gallon biodiesel plant REG has announced. By 2008, REG intends to have the capacity to market more than 310 million gallons of biodiesel a year.
