A press release by United Press International (UPI, about.upi.com) reports that the Army Corps of Engineers (www.usace.army.mil) is predicting floodwaters will be pumped out of New Orleans by early-to-mid October. According to UPI, water levels are dropping by a foot a day in some areas of the city, with the equivalent of an Olympic-size swimming pool of water going into Lake Pontchartrain every seven seconds. The corps believes flooded pockets will likely remain beyond October because the storm sewer system is clogged up. But the corps says the end of the major pumping effort will allow federal, state, and local agencies to begin removing debris and surveying the city to determine what”s salvageable.
