Researchers at Penn State University (www.psu.edu) estimate the wellhead value of gas recoverable from the Marcellus shale in Pennsylvania is one trillion dollars and could produce enough gas to supply the entire United States for two years, according to a report by the Pocono Record (www.poconorecord.com).

Marcellus shale is a geologic formation found about a mile below the ground. It covers nearly 100,000 square miles through parts of Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and New York. The formation covers 60 percent of Pennsylvania — including Monroe and Pike counties. The Pocono Record reports that researchers calculated 10 percent of the gas — 50 trillion cubic feet — was recoverable.
