Flow Control Honored for Editorial Excellence

Flow Control (www.flowcontrolnetwork.com), The Magazine of Fluid Handling Systems, was honored for editorial prowess in the 20th annual Awards for Publication Excellence (APEX, www.apexawards.com) competition. Flow Control won an APEX Award in the category of Editorial & Advocacy Writing for its August 2007 "Viewpoint" column, "How Clean Can ‘Clean Coal’ Be?", authored by Flow Control Editor, Matt Migliore. All told, there were more than 4,400 nominations in 11 major categories for APEX 2008. "We are very proud to be among this year’s APEX winners, and we are particularly excited to be selected from such a long list of worthy nominees," said John Harris, publisher of Flow Control magazine. "Matt is an excellent editor, who works very hard to make sure Flow Control is in synch with the heartbeat of the fluid handling industry, so we’re extremely happy for him as well." Flow Control’s winning entry, "How Clean Can ‘Clean Coal’ Be?", is the product of an extensive research effort aimed at shedding some light on the feasibility of clean coal technology in a real-world application environment. Using specific examples from a range of different perspectives, the column effectively highlights the complex nature of enabling coal-based energy production that is, in fact, clean. In the end, the column makes the case that while it is possible to process coal power in an environmentally friendly fashion, the technology required to do so is so costly at this point that it reduces, to a certain extent, the economic advantages that make coal such an attractive energy source. In reaching its conclusion, the column is careful not to preach, but rather to provide readers the information they need to answer their own questions in the clean-coal debate. The APEX competition is based on excellence in graphic design, editorial content, and the success of the entry — in the opinion of the judges — in achieving overall communications effectiveness and excellence.
