A recent four-part series by the German magazine ATP (Automatisierungstechnische Praxis) provides an in-depth analysis of the emerging technology PACTware (www.pactware.com), a fieldbus-independent, FDT-based software for operating field instruments. PACTware is the brainchild of a consortium of mid-sized automation companies, including such industry notables as Burkert Fluid Control Systems (www.burkert.com), Endress+Hauser (www.us.endress.com), Invensys Foxboro (www.foxboro.com), KROHNE (www.krohne-mar.com), and Pepperl+Fuchs (www.pepperl-fuchs.com). In the article, a team of PACTware experts outlines how PACTware has been used to solve unique problems in different fields of industrial applications.

The PACTware Consortium has existed for approximately five years. According to the consortium, 26,000 users worldwide have implemented PACTware, which is available as a free download on the PACTware Web site.
