NSF International (www.nsf.org) announced that The Cast Iron Soil Pipe Institute (CISPI, www.cispi.org) member companies’ soil pipe and fitting products have been certified. Cast iron soil pipe and fittings are used in building construction for sanitary and storm drain, waste, and vent piping applications.

“The Institute”s quality control program began in the early 1960”s," said Bill LeVan, CISPI executive vice president, in a prepared statement. "The addition of NSF Certification adds an oversight to this on-going program and provides an added assurance that products made by CISPI member companies are compliant with the product standards.”

NSF Certification demonstrates compliance with the CISPI 301: Hubless Cast Iron Soil Pipe Fittings and ASTM A 74 Standards: Specification for Cast Iron Soil Pipe and Fittings. Requirements of these standards include:

  • chemical analysis,
  • tensile strength, and
  • dimensions for cast iron soil pipe and fittings used in gravity flow plumbing, drain, waste and vent sanitary, and stormwater applications.

These standards ensure proper drainage, as the recent concern over severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) emphasizes the importance of quality in the sanitary drainage system. Made from recycled scrap iron and steel, cast iron pipe and fittings are also environmentally sound.

The NSF Mark on pipes and fittings manufactured by the institute’s members and evaluated by the Institute and NSF inspectors demonstrates compliance with CISPI 301 and ASTM A 74.
