The American Water Works Association (AWWA, www.awwa.org) released a training DVD about best practices for maintaining water treatment filters. According to AWWA, water treatment filter systems need to be optimized to achieve a consistent, high level of particle removal regardless of changes in raw water quality.

The DVD, titled Optimizing Filtration Operations, provides water treatment operators with information on how to optimize:
• Coagulation
• Flocculation
• Sedimentation
• Filtration
• Filter backwash
• Flow rate
• Filter bed maintenance

Filtration goals set by the Partnership for Safe Water are used in the DVD as performance goals for particle removal.
