Pharma. Ind. to Rethink Position on Disposables

The pharmaceutical industry is considering its use of disposables as it looks to improve its environmental footprint, according to a new report by ARC Advisory Group.

Traditionally, in pharmaceutical manufacturing, safety, efficacy, and quality have been at the forefront of every initiative. However, ARC says today's pharmaceutical manufacturers also strive to produce quality products with minimal environmental impact to both reduce costs and enhance their public image.

The pharmaceutical industry currently leads most industries in terms of environmental actions, with current initiatives focusing on water and energy consumption, reducing waste discharges, and utilizing alternative energy sources.

Developing sustainable pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device manufacturing processes is challenging and may require new business models, processes, and equipment, according to ARC.
